Abstract

ABSTRACT

Hypertension is a disease that is closely related to the elderly (elderly). The elderly experience physiological changes such as a decrease in the body's immune response, and heart valves become thicker and stiffer. These changes cause an increase in blood vessel resistance, which makes the elderly more susceptible to hypertension. Based on the number of hypertension sufferers at the Tugumulyo Health Center, OKI Regency, the number of elderly people suffering from hypertension in 2021 was 4,359 cases, in 2022 it increased to 4,781 cases, and in 2023 it increased again to 5,247 cases. This study aims to determine the relationship between gender, Body Mass Index (BMI), family history, smoking habits, salt consumption, knowledge and attitudes towards the incidence of hypertension in the elderly at the Tugumulyo Community Health Center. Conducted in March-April 2024. This research is quantitative with a cross-sectional design, the population in this study is all elderly people who visited and received treatment at the Tugumulyo Health Center, OKI Regency in 2024, totaling 86 people. Data collection and retrieval uses a questionnaire. The results of the statistical test analysis used the Chi-Square statistical test and logistic regression where the results showed that there was a significant relationship (p value < 0.05) for the variables body mass index (BMI) (0.001), family history (0.014), smoking habits (0.013) , salt consumption (0.000), knowledge (0.001), attitude (0.005) towards the incidence of hypertension at the Tugu Mulyo Community Health Center. There is no relationship between the gender variable (0.161) and the incidence of hypertension at the Tugu Mulyo Community Health Center. It is recommended that health workers increase community health center program activities in the form of counseling or assistance regarding the prevention of hypertension or management of hypertension in the elderly.
