Abstract

Caryogenic foods are foods that contain fermented carbohydrates, sticky and easily destroyed in the mouth, causing a decrease inplaque pH to 5.5 or less and stimulating the occurrence of the caries process. Dental caries is the destruction of the hard tissues of the teeth caused by acids present in carbohydrates through the intermediary of microorganisms present in saliva. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the habit of consuming karyogenic foods with the incidence of caries in school-age children at SDN 101 Pekanbaru. The type of research used is quantitative by using a descriptive design. The population in this study was grade IV-A students of SDN 101 Pekanbaru with a total of 35 students. Sampling technique by meansof total sampling. Data collection using questionnaires, the collected data is then processed and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs. The results of the study on the habit of consuming karyogenic foods as many as 21 respondents (60%) high, 14 respondents (40%) low. The incidence of dental caries was 20 respondents (57.1%) caries, 15 respondents (42.9%) did not caries. Data analysis includes univariate analysis by looking for frequency distribution, bivariate analysis with Chi-Square test(α0.5) to find out the relationship between variables. The results showed that based on the results of the Chi-Square test obtained a value of p0.407The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between consuming karyogenic foods and the incidence of caries in school children at SDN 101 Pekanbaru
