Abstract

Background: Prediabetes is metabolic disorder characterized by blood glucose levels above normal but below the diagnostic threshold for diabetes mellitus. This condition is major public health concern because most individuals with prediabetes are risk of developing diabetes and related complications without early detection and intervention. Objective: To analyze clinical, behavioral, and sociodemographic factors associated with prediabetes among productive-age adults. Methods: This study used observational case-control design conducted at Swara Medika Clinic, Medan. The sample consisted of 60 cases and 60 controls selected using simple random sampling. Cases were respondents with prediabetes based on fasting blood glucose levels of 100–125 mg/dL, while controls had normal fasting blood glucose levels. Independent variables included body mass index, cholesterol, blood pressure, genetic, physical activity, smoking, dietary pattern, age, sex, and education. Data were analyzed using logistic regression. Results: Three variables were significantly in multivariate analysis: physical inactivity (p<0.001; OR=10.67; 95%CI=3.66–31.10), unhealthy dietary pattern (p<0.001; OR=7.89; 95%CI=2.79–22.32), and hypertension (p<0.001; OR=5.71; 95%CI=2.16–15.09). Conclusion: Physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary patterns, and hypertension were associated with prediabetes among productive-age adults at Swara Medan Clinic. Physical inactivity was dominant factor associated with prediabetes
